What Is eCommerce SEO?
eCommerce SEO is the process of optimising an online store to increase its visibility in organic search results, driving more qualified traffic that converts into customers and revenue. It encompasses product page optimisation, category page SEO, technical improvements, content marketing, and link building, all specific specifically for the unique challenges and opportunities of selling products online.
Organic search drives an average of 33% of all eCommerce traffic, making it the single largest traffic channel for most online stores. Unlike paid advertising, where traffic stops the moment you stop spending, organic traffic compounds over time. The product pages, content, and technical improvements you invest in today continue driving traffic and revenue for months and years to come.
eCommerce SEO differs significantly from optimising service websites or blogs. Online stores face unique challenges including managing duplicate content from product variants, handling faceted navigation, optimising hundreds or thousands of product pages at scale, implementing commercial schema markup, and competing against marketplace giants like Amazon and eBay. These challenges require specialised eCommerce SEO expertise, a generic SEO approach will miss critical issues and opportunities.
For UK eCommerce businesses, the opportunity is substantial. British consumers spent over £120 billion online in 2025, and a growing proportion of that spending starts with a Google search. Whether you sell fashion, homewares, electronics, supplements, or any other product category, eCommerce SEO ensures your store is visible to customers actively searching for what you sell, at the exact moment they're ready to buy.
Our eCommerce SEO Services
Comprehensive eCommerce SEO services designed to increase organic traffic, improve conversion rates, and drive sustainable revenue growth
Product Page SEO
Product pages are the revenue engine of any eCommerce store, and they need to rank for commercial keywords that indicate buying intent. We optimise every element: from keyword-rich product titles and compelling meta descriptions to structured product descriptions that address customer objections, detailed specifications, and frequently asked questions. We implement Product schema markup that enables rich results showing price, availability, and star ratings directly in Google search results. For stores with hundreds or thousands of products, we develop templated optimisation frameworks that maintain quality at scale while ensuring every page has unique, value-adding content.
Category & Collection Page SEO
Category pages often have the highest commercial intent and search volume, yet most eCommerce stores leave them bare with nothing but a product grid. We transform your category pages into powerful ranking assets by adding unique, keyword-optimised descriptions that help both users and search engines understand the page's purpose. We implement proper heading hierarchies, add FAQ sections targeting long-tail queries, build strategic internal links to related categories and supporting content, and ensure each category page targets a distinct keyword cluster to avoid cannibalisation.
Technical SEO
eCommerce sites face unique technical challenges that general SEO agencies often miss. We address faceted navigation creating infinite crawl paths, pagination handling for large product catalogues, canonical tag implementation for product variants and sorting options, crawl budget optimisation to ensure Google prioritises your most important pages, XML sitemap configuration, site architecture optimisation for flat hierarchies, and Core Web Vitals improvements. We also handle platform-specific issues whether you're on Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, or another platform.
Content Marketing
Content marketing drives top-of-funnel traffic and builds the topical authority that supports your product page rankings. We develop comprehensive content strategies including buying guides that target research-phase keywords, how-to content that attracts relevant audiences, product comparison articles that capture commercial intent, seasonal content calendars aligned with your sales peaks, and user-generated content strategies. Every piece of content includes strategic internal links to product and category pages, distributing link equity and guiding users toward conversion points.
Link Building
Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking factors for eCommerce sites. We build high-quality, relevant backlinks through digital PR campaigns that earn coverage in industry publications, product review outreach to bloggers and influencers, resource page link building, broken link reclamation, and strategic partnerships with complementary brands. Every placement is on a genuine publication with its own readership, never a network built to sell links. We never use tactics that could put your site at risk. Our focus is on sustainable link building that compounds over time and drives both referral traffic and ranking improvements.
Conversion Rate Optimisation
Driving traffic to your store is only half the equation, converting that traffic into sales is equally important. We analyse your user journey from landing page to checkout, identifying friction points and opportunities to improve conversion rates. This includes optimising product page layouts for clarity and trust, improving site search functionality, streamlining the checkout process, implementing trust signals (reviews, security badges, guarantees), and A/B testing key page elements. Even small improvements in conversion rate can dramatically increase your organic revenue without any additional traffic.
Our eCommerce SEO Process
A proven, systematic approach to growing your store's organic revenue
- 1
eCommerce SEO Audit
We conduct a comprehensive audit of your entire online store covering technical SEO health, product page quality, category page optimisation, content gaps, backlink profile, and competitive positioning. This audit identifies quick wins for immediate impact and long-term opportunities for sustained growth.

Technical & On-Page Optimisation
We resolve all technical issues: fixing crawl errors, implementing schema markup, optimising page speed, setting up proper canonicals, and improving site architecture. Every product and category page receives optimised titles, descriptions, and structured content.
- 4
Content Strategy & Creation
We develop and publish buying guides, comparison articles, and how-to content that drives top-of-funnel traffic and supports product page rankings. Content is planned around seasonal trends and commercial opportunities.
- 5
Link Building & Digital PR
We execute targeted link building campaigns through product reviews, digital PR, industry partnerships, and resource link building. Every link acquisition is tracked and reported alongside its impact on rankings.
- 6

What Are eCommerce SEO Services?
A fair question, because the phrase covers everything from a one-off audit to a full growth programme.
eCommerce SEO services are the work of increasing the organic revenue an online store earns from search. That is deliberately phrased around revenue rather than traffic, because traffic that does not convert is a cost, not a result.
In practice an ecommerce SEO strategy has four parts. Technical SEO makes the store crawlable, indexable and fast. Category and product page optimisation turns your commercial pages into pages that can actually rank. Content captures the research-stage demand that happens before anyone is ready to buy. Digital PR and link building earn the authority that competitive categories require.
What has changed recently is where the discovery happens. Buyers no longer start every product search on Google. They ask ChatGPT to compare options, ask Gemini for a recommendation, and search inside marketplaces and social platforms. Modern ecommerce SEO has to cover search and discovery across all of it, which is why structured product data and genuine comparison content matter more than they did two years ago.
Why eCommerce SEO Has Changed: AI and Search Beyond Google
eCommerce SEO advice written even two years ago is now partly wrong, and the part that is wrong is the most important part: the assumption that product discovery starts with a Google search and ends with a click on a blue link. For a growing share of buyers it does neither.
AI-powered discovery has become a real channel. Shoppers now ask ChatGPT to compare three products, ask Gemini which option suits a specific need, and get an answer assembled from sources they never visit. AI Overviews sit above the organic results on an increasing share of commercial queries and answer the question in place. The consequence is uncomfortable and worth stating plainly: you can hold position one and lose the sale, because the answer was given before anybody scrolled. Visibility and traffic have come apart, and reporting that tracks only sessions will show a decline that is actually a change in how the same demand is being met.
What earns a citation is not what earned a click. A language model assembling a product recommendation needs unambiguous, machine-readable facts: complete Product and Offer schema with price, availability, currency, GTIN, shipping and returns; specifications stated as text rather than buried in an image; genuine comparison content that names alternatives honestly; and reviews it can read. Stores that treat structured data as an SEO checkbox are invisible to this. Stores that treat it as their product database made public do well, often better than their domain authority suggests they should.
Discovery has also fragmented away from search engines entirely. Amazon remains the first stop for a large share of product searches. TikTok and Instagram now function as discovery engines for whole categories. Google Shopping's free listings, Google Lens and visual search each bring their own requirements. None of these replace organic search, and all of them mean the same catalogue data has to be correct in more places than it used to be. Feed quality has quietly become an SEO discipline rather than a paid media one.
What we do differently because of this. We optimise for search and discovery rather than for rankings alone, and we report AI search visibility alongside conventional rankings so you can see both. That means structured data treated as a first-class deliverable, comparison and buying-guide content that answers the question a model would be asked, entity consistency so your brand is recognisable across sources, feed accuracy for Shopping and marketplaces, and reporting that tracks citations and impressions alongside sessions so a fall in clicks is not mistaken for a fall in demand.
What has not changed. Almost all the fundamentals. Crawlability, site speed, sensible architecture, category pages that deserve to rank, product pages with unique content, and authority earned through links. AI has changed where the answer is delivered, not what makes a store worth recommending. Anyone selling you a wholly new discipline is selling repackaged basics, and anyone telling you nothing has changed has not looked at their impression-to-click ratio lately.
Technical Foundations and Structured Data
Platform-agnostic by design. We work across Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, Volusion and custom builds, because the underlying problems are the same even when the fixes differ.
Crawlability and indexation
Faceted navigation, filters, sort parameters and internal search pages can generate tens of thousands of near-identical URLs on a mid-sized catalogue. We control what is crawlable and indexable so crawl budget is spent on the pages that earn revenue, then verify coverage in Google Search Console.
Audience personas and keyword mapping
We start from who is buying and why, building personas from your existing customer and analytics data, then map queries to the stage they belong to. Every keyword is assigned to one page, so category, product and guide content each have a defined job and stop competing with each other.
Structured product data
Product, Offer, AggregateRating and BreadcrumbList markup implemented and validated, with price, availability, currency, GTIN and shipping detail included. This drives rich results in search, supports free listings, and is increasingly what AI shopping assistants read when assembling recommendations.
Review schema and social proof
Review and rating markup implemented in line with Google's guidelines so star ratings can appear in results, alongside a review collection strategy that keeps the underlying content genuine and current. Review content also feeds E-E-A-T signals, and E-E-A-T is what separates a product page Google trusts from one it merely indexes, as well as giving AI assistants something to quote.
Category Pages, Product Pages and Content
Category page optimisation
Category and collection pages usually carry the highest commercial intent and the most search volume, and are usually left as a bare product grid. We add unique keyword-led copy, correct heading structure, FAQ sections targeting long-tail queries, and internal links to related categories, with each page owning a distinct keyword cluster.
Product page optimisation
Titles and meta descriptions built for intent and click-through, structured descriptions that handle objections, specification tables, FAQs, user-generated review content and disciplined image alt text. For large catalogues we build templated frameworks that hold quality at scale while keeping each page genuinely unique.
Buying guides and comparison content
Best-of roundups, versus comparisons, sizing and fit guides and how-to content that capture research-stage demand, build topical authority and earn links, each linking into the categories and products it supports.
Digital PR and link building
Data-led digital PR, product review outreach, and resource and broken link building from real, relevant publications. Ecommerce categories are usually won on authority, and authority is the slowest part to build, so it starts early.
eCommerce SEO Migration Checklist
Replatforming is the single most common way an established store loses its organic revenue. This is the checklist we run, and you are welcome to hold any agency to it, including us.
Full URL inventory
Every existing URL crawled and catalogued, with traffic, rankings and backlinks attached so the pages that carry value are known before anything moves.
URL mapping
Every old URL mapped to its closest equivalent on the new platform. Where no equivalent exists, a deliberate decision is made rather than defaulting to the homepage, which wastes the link equity entirely.
301 redirect implementation
Redirects built and tested on staging before launch, not written afterwards. Chains collapsed to a single hop so authority is not lost through repeated redirects.
On-page carry-over
Meta titles and descriptions, headings, structured data, internal links, image alt text and canonical logic transferred deliberately rather than regenerated by the new platform's defaults.
Pre-launch benchmark
Rankings, organic sessions, indexed page count and revenue recorded before the switch, so post-launch performance is measured against a known baseline instead of a guess.
Post-launch monitoring
Daily checks on Google Search Console for crawl errors, index coverage and manual actions in the weeks after launch, with issues fixed while they are still small.
We support migrations onto and between Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Adobe Commerce and BigCommerce, and we work alongside your development team or ours. See our Shopify development and WordPress development services for the build side.
Enterprise eCommerce SEO and Multi-SKU Catalogues
Enterprise eCommerce SEO is a different discipline from the same work done at small scale, and treating it as the same job with a bigger invoice is how large catalogues stay stuck. Once you pass roughly ten thousand SKUs, the page-by-page approach stops being merely slow and starts being impossible.
The work becomes systems work. Templated optimisation rules that generate sensible titles, descriptions and internal links across thousands of pages from your product data. Automated internal linking driven by catalogue relationships rather than by hand. Log file analysis to see where Googlebot is actually spending its crawl budget, which on large catalogues is routinely 60% or more on pages that will never earn a sale: filtered views, sort orders, out-of-stock variants, paginated depths nobody reaches. Reclaiming that crawl allocation is often the single highest-value technical project available to a large store.
Prioritisation by revenue, not by volume. With a hundred thousand pages you cannot work on everything, so the ordering matters more than the technique. We rank opportunities by expected revenue contribution: current position, realistic achievable position, search demand, margin and conversion rate for that product group. A category three positions from page one on a high-margin range outranks a hundred long-tail product pages in priority, and the spreadsheet says so before anybody argues about it.
Revenue forecasting. Enterprise clients need a number before they can fund a programme, so we build a revenue forecast rather than promising rankings. Revenue forecasting works from current impressions and positions per term group, realistic position improvement based on the competitive gap, established click-through rates by position, your actual conversion rate and average order value. That produces a range, with the assumptions visible, and a break-even point for the engagement. Forecasting this way is also how we argue against work: if the forecast does not clear the cost, we say so rather than selling the retainer. We then track actual against forecast monthly, which keeps everybody honest and makes the following year's forecast better.
Faceted navigation at scale deserves specific mention because it is where most enterprise crawl budget dies. Every filter combination is a potential URL, and a catalogue with eight filters can generate millions of them. We decide which facets should be indexable because they represent real search demand, such as colour or size for fashion, which should be crawlable but not indexed, and which should be blocked outright, then implement that through canonicals, robots directives and internal linking rather than hoping Google works it out.
International and multi-region catalogues add hreflang, currency and duplicate content across regional variants. Getting hreflang wrong on a large catalogue does not produce a small error, it produces the wrong country's page ranking in every market simultaneously.
Local eCommerce, In-House Training and Consultancy
Local ecommerce SEO. Retailers with physical stores alongside an online catalogue have an advantage most fail to use. Local inventory visibility, store location pages, Google Business Profile optimisation per branch and local landing pages capture demand that pure-play competitors cannot reach.
Training and workshops for in-house teams. Some clients want capability rather than a retainer. We run practical workshops covering technical SEO for your platform, category and product optimisation, content planning and reporting, with documentation your team keeps. Several clients use this to bring work in-house over time, which we think is a perfectly good outcome and say so upfront.
eCommerce SEO consultant engagements. Where you have an in-house team that needs direction rather than delivery, we work as an ecommerce SEO consultant or embedded ecommerce SEO expert: audit, strategy, prioritised roadmap and regular review sessions, with your team executing.
Getting Cited by AI Search
Search and discovery no longer start and end with Google. Shoppers ask assistants to compare products, shortlist brands and recommend where to buy, and they search inside marketplaces and social platforms too. An ecommerce SEO strategy limited to one search engine is now measurably incomplete.
Generative engine optimisation, also called answer engine optimisation, is the discipline that covers this, and the mechanism behind an AI recommendation is not mysterious. Models draw on structured product data, review content, comparison articles and the general authority of the domain. Retailers with all four get named. Retailers with none are invisible in a channel that leaves no trace in their analytics.
Structured product data at catalogue scale
Product, Offer and AggregateRating markup applied consistently across every SKU, not just the flagship lines, with feed data in Google Merchant Center kept in agreement with the on-page markup.
Review schema and real review content
Valid Review markup backed by genuine written reviews. Ratings alone give an assistant a number; review text gives it something to quote about your product specifically.
Comparison content that answers the question
Buying guides, versus pages and category explainers structured answer-first. This is the format assistants lean on most when a shopper asks which option to choose.
Domain authority still counts
Models weigh the credibility of the source. Digital PR and genuine editorial coverage improve your odds of being the retailer cited rather than the one omitted.
Included in every ecommerce SEO engagement, with prompt visibility reported alongside organic revenue so you can see both channels in one place.
Areas We Serve
Online retail is not constrained by geography, and neither is this service. We work with UK ecommerce businesses wherever they are based, across Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Adobe Commerce and BigCommerce, including brands selling into several countries.
Our ecommerce clients trade from Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Brighton, Nottingham, Oxford and elsewhere, and a number operate purely from a warehouse with no shopfront at all. Where you do have physical stores, local ecommerce SEO puts your stock and branches in front of nearby shoppers, which is an advantage pure-play competitors cannot match.
