Wix SEO is the practice of optimising a Wix-built website to rank effectively in Google search results, working within and around the platform's known technical limitations compared to WordPress or custom-built sites.

Wix runs about 3.5% of all websites. Google treats a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less as good, and both are achievable on Wix once the structure is right. Most Wix sites take around 6 months to show significant SEO movement.

Is Wix Good for SEO?
Yes, Wix can rank well on Google with proper optimisation. This is the short, direct answer that many SEO professionals are reluctant to give because Wix had significant SEO limitations in its early days. But the platform has invested heavily in SEO improvements over the past several years, and in 2026, a well-optimised Wix site can compete effectively in search results.
Google's own John Mueller has publicly stated that Wix sites can rank just as well as sites built on any other platform. The ranking factors Google uses, content quality, backlinks, user experience, page speed, and technical health, are platform-agnostic. What matters is how well your site is optimised, not which platform built it.
That said, Wix does have some genuine SEO limitations compared to WordPress. These include restricted URL control, limited access to server-side code, a smaller app ecosystem for SEO tools, and some page speed overhead from the platform's own JavaScript. These limitations don't prevent ranking, but they do mean that Wix SEO requires platform-specific expertise to work around constraints and maximise the platform's strengths.
The businesses that struggle with Wix SEO typically have two things in common: they're using default settings that haven't been optimised, and they're following generic SEO advice written for WordPress that doesn't apply to Wix. Our local SEO services and Wix-specific approach addresses both issues, delivering results that prove Wix is a viable SEO platform when properly optimised.
Our Wix SEO Services
Wix-specific SEO services designed to maximise your website's search visibility within the platform's capabilities
Wix SEO Setup & Configuration
Wix provides a built-in SEO setup wizard (Wix SEO Wiz), but it only scratches the surface of what's possible. We go far beyond the basics: properly configuring your site's meta titles and descriptions, setting up Google Search Console and Analytics integration, configuring your sitemap settings, setting up proper URL structures (Wix allows custom URLs but many users leave defaults), implementing Open Graph tags for social sharing, configuring 301 redirects for any changed pages, and ensuring your robots.txt is correctly set up. We also configure Wix's built-in SEO settings panel for each page type including static pages, blog posts, dynamic pages, and product pages.
Content Optimisation
Content is where Wix sites can truly compete with WordPress and Shopify. We develop comprehensive content strategies that use Wix's blog feature to build topical authority, create service and landing pages optimised for your target keywords, write compelling meta descriptions that maximise click-through rates, implement proper heading hierarchies (H1-H6) on every page, add internal links connecting related content across your site, and optimise image alt text and file names for visual search. Every piece of content is written with both users and search engines in mind, targeting keywords with real search volume and commercial intent.
Speed Optimisation
Wix has historically been criticised for slow page speeds, but the platform has made significant improvements with Wix Turbo and their latest editor. We optimise your Wix site's performance by compressing and properly sizing all images, minimising the use of heavy animations and videos that slow rendering, optimising above-the-fold content loading, reducing the number of third-party integrations and apps, implementing lazy loading for below-the-fold content, and choosing performance-optimised templates and layouts. While you can't access server-side configuration on Wix like you can on WordPress, there are still many client-side optimisations that significantly improve Core Web Vitals scores.
Schema Markup
Wix has introduced built-in schema markup support, but it's limited to basic types and often doesn't implement them correctly. We add comprehensive structured data to your Wix site using Wix's custom code features, including LocalBusiness schema for service-area businesses, FAQPage schema for FAQ sections, Article schema for blog posts, BreadcrumbList schema for navigation, Product schema for eCommerce items, and Organization schema for brand identity. Proper schema implementation can reach rich results in Google that dramatically increase click-through rates: showing star ratings, FAQs, and other enhanced information directly in search results.
Image SEO
Images are critical for both user experience and SEO on Wix sites. We optimise every image on your site by adding descriptive, keyword-rich alt text that helps visually impaired users and tells Google what each image depicts, compressing images to reduce file sizes without visible quality loss, using Wix's built-in image optimisation features effectively, implementing proper image file naming conventions, and using Wix's automatic WebP conversion for modern browsers. For businesses that rely on visual content, restaurants, portfolios, real estate, image SEO can drive significant traffic from Google Image Search.
Link Building & Authority
Wix sites often struggle with domain authority because they're frequently newer sites that haven't invested in link building. We build high-quality, relevant backlinks to your Wix site through local directory submissions (for local businesses), guest posting on industry-relevant blogs, digital PR campaigns that earn media coverage, resource page link building, and strategic partnerships with complementary businesses. We also optimise your internal linking structure to distribute link equity effectively across your most important pages. Links come from real, relevant sites only, which matters more on Wix because you have fewer technical levers to compensate with.
Wix SEO Limitations and How We Overcome Them
We're honest about Wix's limitations, and we have proven solutions for each one
Limited URL Control
Wix enforces URL structures that can't be fully customised like on WordPress. Pages use a flat hierarchy and you can't create custom URL patterns for blog categories or dynamic pages. However, you can set custom slugs for individual pages, and we ensure every slug is keyword-optimised and clean.
Our Solution:
We optimise URL slugs for every page, implement proper redirects for any URL changes, and structure your site navigation to compensate for flat URL architecture.
Restricted Access to Code
Unlike WordPress, Wix doesn't give you full access to your site's HTML, CSS, or server configuration. You can't edit robots.txt directly, customise your XML sitemap granularly, or add code to specific template sections without using Wix's custom code tools (Velo by Wix).
Our Solution:
We use Wix Velo (custom code features) to implement schema markup, custom tracking scripts, and advanced SEO configurations that aren't available through the standard editor.
Page Speed Challenges
Wix loads its own platform JavaScript alongside your site content, which adds to page weight. While Wix has improved significantly with Wix Turbo, achieving the same speed scores as a well-optimised WordPress site remains challenging.
Our Solution:
We focus on optimising everything within your control: image compression, reducing heavy elements, minimising apps, and using Wix's built-in performance features to achieve the best possible Core Web Vitals scores.
Limited Blogging Capabilities
Wix's blog feature is functional but less powerful than WordPress for content marketing at scale. Category management is basic, there's limited plugin functionality, and some advanced content formatting options are restricted.
Our Solution:
We work within Wix's blogging capabilities to create a consistent content publishing strategy, use tags and categories effectively, and implement internal linking strategies that build topical authority despite the platform's limitations.
No Plugin Ecosystem
While Wix has an app market, it doesn't compare to WordPress's extensive plugin ecosystem. There's no Yoast SEO or Rank Math equivalent for Wix, meaning many SEO tasks require manual implementation or custom code.
Our Solution:
We handle all SEO configurations manually using Wix's built-in tools and Velo custom code. This actually ensures every optimisation is implemented correctly, unlike plugins that can create conflicts.

Wix SEO Tips & Best Practices
Complete every field in Wix's SEO settings panel for each page: title, description, URL slug, and social sharing image. Default settings leave ranking potential on the table.
Use Wix's blog feature consistently, publish at least 2 SEO-optimised posts per month targeting keywords your audience actually searches for.
Add descriptive alt text to every single image. Wix makes this easy through the image settings panel, and it can drive significant traffic from Google Image Search.
Set up Google Search Console and submit your Wix sitemap to ensure Google is discovering and indexing all your important pages.
Optimise your Wix site's mobile experience: check every page on an actual mobile device, not just the Wix mobile editor preview.
Use Wix's 301 redirect manager whenever you change a page URL to preserve any existing SEO value and avoid broken links.
Minimise the use of heavy animations, auto-playing videos, and complex effects that slow your page load time.
Add FAQ sections to your key service pages and implement FAQPage schema markup through Wix Velo custom code.
Wix Website SEO: What Actually Moves the Needle
Wix website SEO gets discussed as though it were a separate discipline. It is not. The ranking factors are identical to every other platform, and only the implementation differs. What changes is where the controls live and which of them Wix hides by default.
Our Wix SEO services UK clients buy most often are the unglamorous ones: fixing heading structure that the drag-and-drop editor has broken, writing unique titles and descriptions to replace Wix defaults, adding custom schema, compressing images, cutting third-party widgets that block rendering, and connecting Google Search Console properly so there is data to work from.
One area worth planning for is voice search. Wix sites skew heavily towards local businesses, and voice queries are longer, more conversational and overwhelmingly local in intent. Structuring content around natural questions, keeping answers direct, and maintaining accurate Google Business Profile data covers voice search and AI assistants at the same time, because both draw on the same underlying signals.
Wix Studio vs Editor vs Harmony: Why It Changes Everything
Wix is now three products, and SEO advice that ignores which one you are using is close to useless. Establishing which editor your site was built in is the first thing we do, before any recommendation is made.
Wix Editor is the original drag-and-drop builder, and it is what most existing Wix sites are built on. It is capable but comparatively rigid: layouts are absolutely positioned, responsive behaviour is limited to a separate mobile view, and the markup it generates is heavier than it needs to be. You can rank well on Wix Editor, but performance work has a lower ceiling.
Wix Studio is the newer professional platform, and from an SEO point of view it is a significant improvement. It uses genuine responsive breakpoints and CSS grid rather than absolute positioning, produces cleaner and lighter markup, gives finer control over headings and semantic structure, and generally achieves better Core Web Vitals. If you are building new, build on Studio.
Wix Harmony is the newest of the three editing experiences, and it is the one most Wix SEO advice has not caught up with yet. The practical point for search is that the SEO controls do not sit in the same places across the three, and neither do the defaults. A setting you would change in the Wix Editor SEO panel may be handled differently in Harmony, and a technique written for Wix Studio may not transfer cleanly. We audit what your build actually exposes rather than working from a generic Wix checklist, because assuming the wrong editor is how obvious wins get missed for months.
Why this matters more than it sounds. The ranking factors are identical across all three. What differs is which levers you can reach, how much markup weight you start with, and how much of the technical work has to be done through custom code rather than a settings panel. Two Wix sites in the same sector, with the same budget, can end up with very different ceilings purely because of which editor they were built in. Knowing which one you are on tells us where the cheap wins are and where we will have to work around the platform.
Should you migrate between them? Only with a plan. There is no in-place upgrade path from Wix Editor to Wix Studio, so it means rebuilding, and rebuilding without careful URL mapping and 301 redirects is how sites lose their rankings. If your Editor site is performing acceptably, the honest answer is often to leave it and invest in content instead. If it is fighting you on speed and structure, migrating is worth it, and we handle the SEO side so nothing is lost in the move.
Technical SEO for Wix
Wix does more of the technical groundwork for you than a self-hosted platform, which is a genuine advantage. What it takes away is the ability to fix anything it gets wrong, so the work sits in the settings most Wix owners never open.
Wix schema markup
Wix supports custom JSON-LD through its markup tools, but almost nobody uses it. We implement Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList markup and validate it, which is often the single clearest differentiator between a Wix site that ranks and one that does not.
Canonical URLs on Wix and Wix 301 redirects
Canonical tags set correctly to consolidate duplicate paths, and 301 redirects managed properly through the Wix URL redirect manager. Redirects matter most after a Wix migration or restructure, where the default behaviour is to leave old URLs returning 404s.
Crawling and indexing control
Wix generates URLs you may not want indexed, particularly from dynamic pages, member areas and filtered views. We manage robots.txt, noindex directives and the sitemap so crawling is spent on pages that earn it, then verify coverage in Google Search Console.
Core Web Vitals on Wix
Wix has improved substantially but still ships heavy JavaScript by default. We work within the platform on image formats and sizing, above-the-fold content structure, app and widget reduction, and font loading to get Core Web Vitals into the green on mobile.
Multilingual and international
Wix Multilingual handles translation but the hreflang and URL structure need checking, because misconfiguration turns language variants into duplicate content competing with each other rather than ranking in their own regions.
Wix eCommerce and product page SEO
Product and collection page optimisation on Wix Stores, covering titles, descriptions, image alt text, Product schema and internal linking, plus the category structure that decides whether your catalogue is crawlable in a sensible shape.
Keyword Research and Content for Wix Sites
Wix keyword research is not different in method from any other platform, but it is different in constraint. Wix sites are usually smaller, often run by the owner, and the page count is limited by how much anyone realistically has time to maintain. That means the selection matters more than it does on a large WordPress site, because you get fewer pages to spend on.
We start by mapping what you actually sell against what people search for, then filter by commercial intent rather than by volume. A term with 90 searches a month from people ready to buy is worth more than one with 900 from people doing research. For most Wix clients that produces a short list of maybe fifteen to thirty target terms, split between service pages, location pages and blog topics.
Search intent decides the page type. Transactional terms get a service or product page. Comparison terms get a comparison page. Question terms get a blog post that answers the question properly and links to the relevant service. Getting this wrong is the most common content mistake we see on Wix: a blog post trying to rank for a buying term, or a service page stuffed with educational content that buyers scroll past.
One page, one job. Wix's flat URL structure makes keyword cannibalisation easy to create by accident, because there is no folder hierarchy signalling which page is the parent. If three pages all target variations of the same term, Google picks one and it is rarely the one you wanted. We map each target term to exactly one page, then use internal linking to make the hierarchy explicit that the URL structure cannot.
From there the content work is the ordinary discipline: one H1 per page, a logical heading structure the drag-and-drop editor has not broken, the target term used naturally in the title, the first paragraph and at least one subheading, genuine depth rather than padding, and internal links to and from related pages. Wix's blog is less powerful than WordPress for publishing at scale, so we prioritise fewer, better pages over volume.
Wix Local SEO
Most Wix sites belong to local businesses, so Wix local SEO is usually where the return is. The platform side is straightforward: LocalBusiness schema, correct NAP details in the site footer and contact page, location pages with genuinely distinct content, and a sensible internal linking structure between them.
The larger share of the work happens off the site. Your Google Business Profile carries roughly a third of local pack ranking weight, citations across UK directories need to be consistent, and reviews drive both ranking and click-through. None of that is affected by your website platform, which is why a well-run Wix site can and does outrank a neglected WordPress competitor.
We deliver Wix local SEO alongside our local SEO services and Google Business Profile optimisation, so the on-site and off-site work is planned together rather than in isolation.
How to Choose a Wix SEO Expert: Consultant vs Agency
There are three ways to buy Wix SEO, and the right one depends mostly on your budget and how much you want to do yourself.
| Who you are hiring | What you get, and what you do not |
|---|---|
| A Wix SEO consultant | gives you a strategy, an audit and direction, and you or your team implement it. This is the cheapest option and works well if someone in-house has time and reasonable confidence with the Wix dashboard. The risk is that a plan nobody implements produces nothing. |
| A Wix SEO agency | does the work as well as the thinking, covering technical implementation, content, citations and link building, with continuity if one person is unavailable. It costs more and is the right answer when you need results rather than a document. |
| A cheap fixed-price package | at under about £200 usually buys a settings checklist: meta tags filled in, a sitemap submitted, alt text added. That has value if your site has never been touched, but it is a one-off tidy-up rather than an SEO programme, and it will not move you in a competitive category. |
Whichever route you take, ask three questions: can they show Wix work specifically rather than generic SEO case studies, will you keep access to your own Google Search Console and Google Business Profile, and is there a contract lock-in. We are happy to answer all three, and we offer both consultation and full management so you are not forced into the wrong shape of engagement.
Our Wix SEO Checklist
Every Wix engagement starts by working through the same checklist, because the same handful of settings are wrong on most sites we audit.
Connect a custom domain and confirm HTTPS. Turn off the Wix default indexing restrictions if they are still active. Write unique title tags and meta descriptions on every page rather than leaving the Wix defaults. Fix heading structure so each page has one H1 and a logical hierarchy, which drag-and-drop editors frequently break. Add descriptive alt text to every image. Set clean, keyword-relevant URL slugs and redirect any you change. Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and check index coverage. Add custom JSON-LD schema. Compress and correctly size images. Reduce third-party apps and widgets that block rendering. Set canonical tags on any duplicate paths. Configure Wix Multilingual hreflang if you sell in more than one language. Connect Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
It is not glamorous, and it is not secret. It is simply rarely done completely, which is precisely why doing it well produces such reliable improvements in search engine rankings.
Getting Cited by AI Search
AI-driven search has changed what visibility means, and Wix owners are usually told they start at a disadvantage in it. They do not. Language models read rendered content and structured data. They do not know or care which website builder produced the page, which means a Wix site can be cited by ChatGPT, Gemini or an AI Overview exactly as readily as anything else. This is worth saying plainly, because a good deal of advice implies otherwise.
What AI-driven search does reward is clarity and structure, and there Wix Studio has an edge. What Wix affects is how easy the work is. Wix Studio produces cleaner, lighter markup and makes structured data more straightforward, so the same effort goes further there than on Wix Editor.
Custom JSON-LD on Wix
Wix supports custom structured data through its markup tools and almost nobody uses it. Complete Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage markup is the clearest single advantage available to a Wix site here.
Question-led page structure
Voice queries and assistant prompts are conversational and long. Structuring pages around the questions customers actually ask, answered directly and immediately, covers both at once.
Local entity consistency
Most Wix sites belong to local businesses, so the details that matter are your Google Business Profile, your citations and the NAP data on the site itself agreeing with each other.
Checking whether it worked
We test the prompts your customers would realistically use and record whether you appear, rather than assuming the markup did its job.
Included in our ongoing Wix SEO plans. It is not a separate product, and anyone selling it as one is repackaging work that should already be happening.
Areas We Serve
Wix sites belong overwhelmingly to local and independent businesses, which makes location more relevant here than on most of our services. Knowing how contested your category is in your town is what decides whether the work is a few weeks of tidying or a genuine campaign.
We optimise Wix and Wix Studio sites for businesses in Edinburgh, Bristol, Nottingham, Sheffield, Cardiff, Brighton, Norwich, Oxford, Bath and Surrey among others. Wix suits smaller operations particularly well, and a good number of our Wix clients are in towns where the local competition has never had any SEO done at all.
