WordPress SEO is the process of optimising a WordPress website's content, technical setup, plugin configuration, and site structure to improve rankings in Google search results and drive more organic traffic.

WordPress runs about 43% of all websites. Google treats a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as good. Plugin bloat is the usual reason a WordPress site misses all three.

What Is WordPress SEO and Why Does It Matter?

WordPress SEO is the practice of configuring and optimising a WordPress website to maximise its visibility in search engine results pages. While WordPress provides a solid technical foundation for SEO, the platform requires strategic configuration and ongoing optimisation to compete effectively in search results.

WordPress offers several inherent SEO advantages: clean, semantic HTML output, customisable URL structures (permalinks), a powerful blogging system for content marketing, thousands of SEO plugins that extend functionality, full control over meta tags, heading hierarchies, and technical settings, and a massive developer community constantly improving the platform. However, these advantages only materialise with proper configuration.

The reality is that most WordPress sites are running with default settings that actively hinder SEO performance. Common issues include misconfigured permalink structures, missing or poorly set up SEO plugins, slow load times from bloated themes and excessive plugins, no schema markup implementation, poor internal linking structures, and security vulnerabilities that can lead to hacking and de-indexing.

Professional WordPress SEO addresses all these issues and goes further: building a content strategy that uses WordPress's blogging capabilities, implementing technical optimisations that generic SEO advice misses, and creating a foundation for sustainable organic growth. Whether you're running a local business website, a corporate site, a blog, or a WooCommerce store, WordPress SEO unlocks performance that your competitors are missing.

Our WordPress SEO Services

Comprehensive WordPress-specific SEO services that reach your site's full ranking potential

SEO Plugin Setup & Configuration

The right SEO plugin is the foundation of WordPress SEO success. We install, configure, and fine-tune either Yoast SEO or Rank Math to ensure every aspect of your site's SEO settings is optimised. This includes configuring XML sitemaps to include only valuable pages, setting up proper canonical URLs, implementing Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tags for social sharing, configuring breadcrumb settings, setting default meta tag templates, and establishing redirect rules. We also configure advanced settings like knowledge graph data, robots.txt rules, and .htaccess optimisation that most WordPress users never touch.

Speed & Performance Optimisation

WordPress sites are notorious for speed issues caused by bloated themes, excessive plugins, unoptimised databases, and poor hosting. We conduct a thorough performance audit and implement specific optimisations including implementing caching at multiple levels (page, browser, object, and database), image compression and lazy loading with WebP conversion, minifying and combining CSS and JavaScript files, optimising database queries and cleaning unnecessary data, implementing a CDN for global content delivery, evaluating and replacing slow plugins with lighter alternatives, and optimising Largest Contentful Paint, First Input Delay, and Cumulative Layout Shift scores.

Content Strategy & Creation

WordPress's powerful blogging capabilities give you a significant SEO advantage, but only if you use them strategically. We develop comprehensive content strategies that include keyword research mapping informational and commercial intent queries, editorial calendars with publishing schedules, content briefs for every article with target keywords and competitive analysis, internal linking plans connecting blog content to key service and product pages, content clustering around pillar topics to build topical authority, and content refreshing strategies for existing posts that have lost rankings. Every piece of content is structured for featured snippets and AI Overview opportunities.

Technical SEO

WordPress's flexibility means it can create complex technical SEO issues if not properly configured. We address every technical element including crawl budget optimisation by preventing indexing of low-value pages like tags, date archives, and author pages on single-author sites. We implement proper pagination with rel='next'/'prev' markup, fix mixed content issues, configure HTTPS properly with correct redirects, implement hreflang tags for multilingual sites, optimise URL structures, fix broken links and redirect chains, and ensure proper implementation of canonical tags across all content types including posts, pages, categories, and custom post types.

Schema Markup Implementation

Structured data helps Google understand your content and display rich results that dramatically increase click-through rates. We implement comprehensive schema markup on WordPress using either JSON-LD via custom code or through properly configured schema plugins. Schema types we implement include Article and BlogPosting for content, LocalBusiness for location-based businesses, FAQPage for FAQ sections, HowTo for instructional content, BreadcrumbList for navigation, Product and Review for eCommerce content, and Organization for brand identity. All schema is validated through Google's Rich Results Test and monitored for errors.

Security & Site Health

Google prioritises secure, well-maintained websites in search results. A hacked or compromised WordPress site can result in complete de-indexing. We implement comprehensive security measures including SSL certificate installation and proper HTTPS configuration, security plugin setup with firewall rules and login protection, regular malware scanning and monitoring, WordPress core, theme, and plugin update management, database backup configuration, and implementation of Content Security Policy headers. We also monitor Google Search Console for security issues and manual actions that could affect your rankings.

Our WordPress SEO Process

    Link Building & Authority

We build high-quality backlinks through guest posting on relevant industry blogs, digital PR, resource page link building, and strategic partnerships. For local businesses, we also build local citations and directory links.

A WordPress SEO Agency or a WordPress SEO Consultant?

WordPress SEO services for UK businesses are sold in three shapes, and the right one depends on what you already have in-house.

As a WordPress SEO consultant we deliver the audit, the strategy and a prioritised roadmap, then review progress at intervals while your team or your developer implements. This suits businesses with capable internal resource who need direction rather than delivery, and it is the cheaper option by some distance.

As a WordPress SEO agency we do the implementation too: technical fixes, content production, internal linking, digital PR and reporting. This suits businesses that need the work done rather than documented.

Choosing a WordPress SEO company is mostly about verification. Ask whether you keep ownership of Google Search Console, GA4 and your hosting, ask to see the technical audit format before you buy, and ask what happens in the first ninety days specifically. Vague answers to any of those are the warning sign.

So how much does WordPress SEO cost? UK pricing typically runs £350 to £2,000 per month depending on site size, competition and content volume. Consultant engagements sit at the lower end, full management at the upper. We publish our pricing rather than quoting on enquiry, because opacity in this industry does nobody any favours.

WordPress Technical SEO

WordPress will happily run for years accumulating technical debt that never announces itself. This is the work that clears it.

Crawlability and indexation

WordPress generates far more URLs than most owners realise: tag archives, date archives, author pages on single-author sites, attachment pages and paginated comment URLs. Left alone they waste crawl budget and create thin, competing pages. We control what is crawlable and indexable through robots.txt, meta directives and XML sitemap configuration, then verify the result in Google Search Console.

Canonicals and redirect chains

Canonical URLs set correctly across posts, pages, categories and custom post types, plus redirect chains collapsed to a single hop. Sites that have been running for years usually carry redirect chains three or four deep from past restructures, and each hop loses a little authority.

Log file analysis

For larger sites we analyse server log files to see what Googlebot is genuinely crawling, how often, and where it is wasting time. This is the only way to know for certain whether your crawl budget is being spent on the pages that matter, and almost no UK agency at this price point does it.

Schema markup and semantic HTML

Organisation, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage, HowTo and BreadcrumbList markup implemented as JSON-LD and validated, on top of genuinely semantic HTML. Both help conventional rich results and give AI crawlers an unambiguous reading of the page.

Yoast vs Rank Math vs SEOPress: Which Plugin?

This is one of the most searched WordPress SEO questions, and the honest answer is that the plugin matters far less than the configuration. All three do the same core job: title and meta control, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, robots directives and schema output. None of them will make your content rank on their own.

Rank Math is what we recommend for most new installs. The free version includes schema, a redirect manager and multiple keyword tracking per post, features Yoast reserves for premium, and its performance footprint is lighter.

Yoast SEO has the longest track record, the best documentation and the gentlest learning curve. If your team is already comfortable with it, switching is rarely worth the disruption on its own.

SEOPress is the value option, with a genuinely capable free tier, a clean interface and no upsell prompts in the admin. It suits agencies and multisite installs where licence costs multiply.

We configure whichever you use properly, which is where the real difference lies: sitemap inclusion rules, indexation settings for archives and taxonomies, breadcrumb and schema output, social markup defaults and redirect handling. A badly configured Rank Math will lose to a well configured Yoast every time.

Core Web Vitals and Site Speed

WordPress speed complaints are almost never about WordPress. They are about plugin bloat, an unoptimised database, missing object caching, oversized images and themes doing far too much per request.

We work to the three metrics Google actually measures. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) covers how quickly the main content appears, addressed through image optimisation, critical CSS, server response time and preloading. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) covers responsiveness, addressed by reducing and deferring JavaScript and breaking up long tasks. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) covers visual stability, addressed with explicit image dimensions, reserved space for embeds and correct font loading.

Typical results are a 50% to 70% reduction in load time and green Core Web Vitals on mobile, which is the field data Google reports rather than a lab score. Where the underlying build is the limitation, our WordPress development team rebuilds the problem components properly.

Keyword Research and Search Intent

Keyword research is where most WordPress SEO engagements are decided, long before anything technical gets touched. A fast, well-structured site targeting terms nobody searches, or terms with the wrong intent behind them, will not produce enquiries. We would rather spend a fortnight getting this right than a year optimising towards the wrong list.

We start from commercial value, not volume. The first exercise is not opening a keyword tool, it is establishing what a customer is worth to you, which services carry margin, and which enquiries your team actually wants more of. That sets the frame. A term with 70 searches a month from people ready to buy is worth more than one with 4,000 from people who will never become customers, and volume-led keyword research systematically buries the first kind under the second.

Mapping intent to page type. Every term falls into one of four intents, and each demands a different page. Transactional intent, somebody wanting to buy or hire now, needs a service or product page. Commercial investigation, somebody comparing options, needs a comparison or pricing page. Informational intent needs a blog post or guide. Navigational intent needs your brand pages to be clean. Ranking a blog post for a transactional term produces traffic that does not convert, and pointing a service page at an informational term produces a page that ranks for nothing. This mapping is the single most common thing we find missing on WordPress sites that have had SEO work done before.

Building the topic model. From the target list we build clusters: one pillar page per major topic, supporting pages for the subtopics, and a clear parent and child relationship between them. WordPress is unusually good at this because categories, tags and custom taxonomies give you real structure to work with, and unusually dangerous because those same taxonomies generate archive pages that compete with the content they are meant to organise. We decide deliberately which archives should be indexable and which should not, rather than accepting the theme's defaults.

Keyword cannibalisation. On a WordPress site of any age, the most valuable early win is usually not new content, it is resolving pages fighting each other. Three posts targeting variations of the same term split their signals and Google picks one, rarely the one you would have chosen. We audit for overlap, then consolidate, redirect or re-target so each term has exactly one page responsible for it. On established sites this often lifts rankings without a single new page being written.

What you get. A keyword map, one row per target term, showing the page responsible for it, the current position, the intent, the estimated value and the priority. It is a working document your team can read, not a spreadsheet export of 4,000 rows. We revisit it quarterly, because search demand shifts and the terms worth chasing at month twelve are not the ones worth chasing at month one.

Content Strategy, Topical Authority and Pruning

Topical authority and topic clusters

We map your subject area into topic clusters: a pillar page covering the theme broadly, supported by focused articles that each answer one question well, all interlinked. This is what builds topical authority, and it is the difference between a blog that publishes and a blog that ranks.

E-E-A-T signals

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust made explicit: named authors with real credentials and author pages, cited sources, transparent business information, and content reviewed by someone who genuinely knows the subject. This matters most in sectors Google treats as sensitive, including legal, medical and financial.

Content pruning and refreshing

Older WordPress sites accumulate posts that attract no traffic and dilute site quality. We audit the archive and decide, page by page, whether to refresh, consolidate, redirect or remove. Pruning is often the fastest ranking gain available on a site with years of publishing behind it.

Keyword cannibalisation

When several pages target the same query, Google picks one and it is rarely the one you would choose. We identify cannibalisation across your archive and resolve it by consolidating, differentiating intent or redirecting, which frequently lifts rankings without a single new page being written.

Internal Linking and Schema

Internal linking is the most underused lever in WordPress SEO. It costs nothing, requires no outreach, and on a site with existing content it is frequently the fastest route to better rankings. It is also the thing almost every WordPress site does by accident rather than on purpose.

What internal links actually do. Three things. They pass authority from pages that have earned links to pages that need to rank. They tell Google which pages you consider important, through how often and how prominently you link to them. And they establish topical relationships, so a cluster of interlinked pages on one subject reads as expertise rather than as scattered posts. Get the structure right and you can move a page several positions without touching its content.

How we build it. We start by finding the orphan pages, the ones with no internal links pointing at them at all, which on a typical WordPress site of a few hundred pages is more than the owner expects. Then we map the link graph against the keyword map, so every priority page has links coming from relevant, established pages, using anchor text that describes the destination rather than saying "click here" or "read more". Pillar pages link down to their supporting content and supporting content links back up. Deep pages get pulled within three clicks of the home page.

Anchor text discipline. Descriptive, varied, and natural. Exact-match anchors on every link look manipulated; generic anchors on every link waste the signal. We use the target term where it reads properly and variations elsewhere, which is how the internal linking on a well-run site looks when nobody has been gaming it.

Where WordPress helps and hurts. Helps: related-post blocks, taxonomy archives and custom fields make systematic linking easy to implement once and maintain automatically. Hurts: automated related-post plugins link on loose similarity rather than on strategy, so they dilute rather than direct. We prefer editorially chosen links in the body copy, supported by templated links where volume demands it.

Schema markup does the same job for machines that internal linking does for crawlers, and it is the foundation of AI search visibility as well as of conventional rich results, it makes relationships explicit. We implement Organisation, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage, HowTo and BreadcrumbList markup as JSON-LD and validate it in the Rich Results Test. BreadcrumbList in particular reinforces the hierarchy your internal links describe, and it earns the breadcrumb display in the search result. Entity optimisation goes a step further: connecting your organisation, your people and your services to the entities Google already recognises, so that the entity relationships behind your content are explicit rather than inferred and your business can be placed in Google's knowledge graph, through consistent naming, sameAs references to authoritative profiles, and author markup that ties content to real, identifiable expertise. That entity layer is increasingly what determines whether AI search surfaces you, because a language model assembling an answer needs to know who you are, not just that a page mentions a keyword.

Internal linking and schema get reviewed every month rather than set up once, because both decay as content is added by people who were not part of the original plan.

WooCommerce SEO and WordPress SEO Migration

WooCommerce SEO. WooCommerce adds ecommerce problems on top of the usual WordPress ones: product variations creating near-duplicate pages, category and tag archives competing with each other, faceted filtering generating crawlable URL combinations, and Product schema that is frequently incomplete. We handle all of it, and for larger catalogues we build templated optimisation frameworks rather than working page by page.

WordPress SEO migration services. Whether you are moving hosts, changing domain, replatforming onto WordPress, or restructuring your URLs, migration is where rankings are most often lost. We map every URL to its replacement with 301 redirects, carry across metadata, headings, structured data and internal links, benchmark rankings and traffic before the move, and monitor Google Search Console closely afterwards so any issue is caught in days rather than months.

Measurement: GA4, Search Console and What We Actually Report

Every WordPress SEO engagement starts with measurement, because without it you are guessing about causation for the next twelve months. Two thirds of the sites we take on have a tracking problem serious enough to distort every conclusion drawn from the data.

GA4 integration. We configure GA4 properly rather than accepting the default install: conversion events defined for the actions that matter, form submissions, calls, quote requests, purchases, rather than counting page views as success; internal traffic and known bot traffic excluded; referral exclusions set so payment gateways do not break attribution; and channel groupings checked so organic search is not quietly absorbing traffic that came from somewhere else. Where the site runs WooCommerce we implement enhanced ecommerce tracking so revenue can be attributed to landing page and to term.

Google Search Console is the more honest of the two for SEO, because it reports what Google saw rather than what your analytics inferred. We use it for index coverage, which pages Google has chosen not to index and why, for query-level impressions and average position, for Core Web Vitals field data, and for catching problems early. A drop in impressions two weeks before a drop in traffic is the warning that saves a quarter.

What we report monthly. Organic sessions, then organic enquiries, which matter more. Rankings for the mapped priority terms rather than a vanity list. Pages gaining and losing. Index coverage changes. Core Web Vitals field data. What we did, what it did, and what we are doing next. If a month went badly we say so and explain why, because the alternative is a report designed to protect the retainer rather than inform the client.

Attribution honesty. SEO takes credit for far too much and far too little depending on who is writing the report. Organic search is usually the last touch on a journey that started elsewhere, and it is often an early touch on a journey that closes through a phone call nobody tracked. We report what the data supports, flag what it cannot show, and resist the temptation to model our way to a bigger number.

What WordPress SEO Services Cost in the UK

How much does WordPress SEO cost? In the UK, ongoing WordPress SEO services run from roughly £500 a month for a small local site to £3,000 or more a month for a competitive national or WooCommerce site. A one-off WordPress SEO audit is typically £500 to £1,500 depending on site size. Anything advertised at under about £250 a month is either a plugin configuration and a monthly report, or it is link building of a kind you do not want pointed at your domain.

What drives the number Three things, mostly. Competition, because outranking four established agencies costs more than outranking three neglected local sites. Site size, because a 40-page brochure site and a 4,000-product WooCommerce catalogue are different jobs. And how much technical debt the existing build carries, since some sites need development work before content work is worth funding at all.
WordPress SEO agency, consultant or company? The labels are used interchangeably in this market and they should not be. A WordPress SEO consultant sells you judgement and a plan that your team implements, which is the cheapest route and works when you have capable people with time. A WordPress SEO agency implements as well as advises, and carries continuity when one person is away. A larger WordPress SEO company may bring specialist depth but often means your account is handled by someone more junior than the person who sold it. We are the middle option, and we will tell you honestly when the first would serve you better.
What we will not do Twelve month lock-ins, because they mainly protect the supplier. Guaranteed rankings, because nobody can guarantee them and the offer is a reliable marker of who to avoid. Or holding your accounts hostage: your Google Search Console, GA4 and WordPress admin remain yours throughout, and you keep everything if we part company.
2026 Search

Getting Cited by AI Search

A growing share of research finishes before anyone clicks. Google answers directly through AI Overviews, and ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot answer without a search results page at all. The question is no longer only whether you rank, but whether you are the source being quoted.

WordPress is well placed for this. Clean templates, straightforward schema and a real publishing workflow make it one of the easier platforms to optimise for generative search, provided the technical foundations hold and the content is organised into coherent clusters rather than scattered posts.

Topic clusters machines can follow

Pillar and supporting pages interlinked so the relationship between them is explicit. Models resolve topical authority from structure as much as from wording, and a well-linked cluster reads as a subject you own.

E-E-A-T made explicit

Named authors with credentials, author pages, cited sources and visible business information. When a model decides whose answer to quote, provenance carries weight.

llms.txt and semantic HTML

An llms.txt file summarising your site for language models, on top of genuinely semantic markup and complete JSON-LD, so crawlers parse your pages the way you intend.

Pruning the pages that dilute you

Thin and outdated posts weaken the signal a model reads from your domain. Content pruning improves generative visibility for the same reason it improves conventional rankings.

Included in every WordPress SEO retainer at no additional cost, because the work is inseparable from the technical and content foundations you are paying for anyway.

Areas We Serve

WordPress SEO is delivered remotely and the results are not tied to a postcode. Where location does matter is if you are a local business, because then your organic rankings and your Google Business Profile need to be worked on together rather than in isolation.

We work with WordPress sites for businesses in Edinburgh, Bristol, Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Cardiff, Southampton, Brighton and Oxford, covering everything from single-location service businesses to national publishers and WooCommerce stores with no physical premises at all.

WordPress SEO, Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about WordPress and WooCommerce SEO, grouped by topic.

Is WordPress good for SEO?
Yes. WordPress powers roughly 43% of the web and gives you complete control over URLs, meta tags, heading structure, schema and technical settings, plus publishing tools that make content strategy straightforward. What it does not do is optimise itself. A default WordPress install with an unconfigured plugin will not rank, which is why WordPress SEO services exist as a discipline.
Yoast vs Rank Math: which should I use?
For most new installs we recommend Rank Math, because its free tier includes schema, a redirect manager and multiple keyword tracking that Yoast reserves for premium, and it is lighter. Yoast has the longer track record, better documentation and a gentler learning curve, so if your team already uses it, switching is rarely worth the disruption. SEOPress is a strong value option for agencies and multisite. Configuration matters far more than the choice.
What is included in a WordPress SEO audit?
Crawlability and indexation analysis, canonical and redirect chain review, plugin configuration assessment, Core Web Vitals against LCP, INP and CLS, schema validation, content and cannibalisation audit, internal linking structure, backlink profile, keyword mapping and competitor comparison. For larger sites we add log file analysis. You receive a prioritised action list with expected impact and effort, and it is yours to keep.
How do you optimise a WordPress site for AI search?
The same foundations, applied deliberately. Clean semantic HTML and complete structured data so machines can parse the page, answer-first content structure so a direct answer is available to quote, entity optimisation and internal linking so relationships between your services, locations and topics are explicit, an llms.txt file summarising the site for language models, and monitoring of whether you appear in AI Overviews and assistant answers for the prompts your buyers use. It is included in every retainer.
Do you fix keyword cannibalisation?
Yes, and it is one of the most common wins on established WordPress sites. When several pages target the same query, Google picks one and it is often not the page you would choose. We map your archive against target queries, identify where pages compete, then consolidate, differentiate intent or redirect. This frequently improves rankings without a single new page being written.
How much do WordPress SEO services cost in the UK?
UK WordPress SEO typically runs £350 to £2,000 per month. Our packages start at £350 per month for foundational work and go to £1,200 per month for competitive markets with substantial content and link building. One-off technical audits and fix projects are available separately. Pricing reflects site size, competition and content volume rather than a percentage of anything. No contracts, no setup fees.
How long does WordPress SEO take?
Technical fixes and on-page optimisation usually show movement in 2 to 4 months. Meaningful results from content and authority building appear between months 4 and 8. Established sites with existing domain authority move faster than new ones. We benchmark rankings, traffic and conversions before starting and report monthly, so you can see the trend rather than waiting for a verdict.
Can plugins handle WordPress SEO on their own?
No. Yoast, Rank Math and SEOPress give you the controls but make almost no decisions for you. They will not choose your keywords, write your content, fix crawl budget waste, resolve cannibalisation, build internal linking architecture, earn links or improve Core Web Vitals. The green light in the editor measures compliance with a simple checklist, not whether a page will rank.
How is WooCommerce SEO different?
WooCommerce adds ecommerce-specific problems: product variations creating near-duplicate pages, competing category and tag archives, faceted filtering generating crawlable URL combinations, and incomplete Product schema. It also raises the stakes on speed, because large catalogues put real load on the database. We handle all of it, and for bigger catalogues we build templated optimisation frameworks rather than optimising page by page.
Can you migrate our site without losing rankings?
Yes, provided it is planned rather than rushed. We map every existing URL to its replacement and implement 301 redirects, carry across metadata, headings, structured data and internal links, and benchmark rankings and organic traffic before the move so any change is measured. Migrations run on staging first and cut over at a low-traffic window, with Google Search Console monitored daily afterwards for crawl and index issues.
