What Is Local SEO and Why Does Your Business Need It?

Local SEO is the process of optimising your online presence to attract more customers from geographically-relevant searches on Google, Bing, and other search engines. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking nationally or globally, local SEO targets people searching for products and services in a specific area. Your area.

The numbers make a compelling case for investing in local SEO. 46% of all Google searches have local intent, meaning nearly half of everything searched on Google is someone looking for a local business. Even more striking, 76% of people who search for something local on their smartphone visit a related business within 24 hours, and 28% of those searches result in a purchase. These aren't passive browsers. They're ready-to-buy customers actively looking for businesses like yours.

Google's local pack, the map section showing three businesses at the top of search results, appears in 93% of all searches with local intent. If your business isn't appearing in this local pack, you're losing customers to competitors who are. The local pack receives significantly more clicks than standard organic results, making it the most valuable real estate in local search.

The difference between local SEO and traditional SEO is significant. Traditional SEO focuses on content quality, backlinks, and technical factors to rank for broad keywords nationally. Local SEO adds an additional layer of geo-specific optimisation including Google Business Profile management, local citation building, review management, and location-specific content creation. The ranking algorithms are different too: Google uses proximity, relevance, and prominence to determine local rankings.

For UK businesses specifically, local SEO is critical because British consumers increasingly use their smartphones to find local services. Whether someone in London searches for a solicitor, someone in Manchester looks for a dentist, or someone in Birmingham needs an emergency plumber, local SEO determines which businesses they find first. Without it, you're invisible to the customers who matter most.

Our Local SEO Services, What's Included

Every local SEO package from iTech Digital includes a comprehensive suite of services designed to improve your visibility in Google Maps, the local pack, and organic search results.

Google Business Profile Optimisation

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for local search visibility. We don't just fill in the basics. We strategically optimise every element of your profile to maximise your chances of appearing in the local pack. This includes selecting the most effective primary and secondary categories based on competitor analysis, writing keyword-rich business descriptions that convert, uploading geo-tagged photos with optimised metadata, creating weekly Google Posts to keep your profile active, managing your Q&A section with pre-seeded questions, and responding to every review professionally. We also monitor your profile for spam edits, track performance through GBP insights, and adjust our strategy based on what's driving the most calls, clicks, and direction requests.

Local Citation Building

Citations, mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites, are one of the strongest local ranking signals. We build and manage your business listings across 200+ UK directories including Yell, Thomson Local, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Scoot, FreeIndex, Cylex, and dozens of industry-specific directories relevant to your business. Every citation is manually verified for accuracy and consistency. We also conduct a full citation audit to identify and correct any existing inconsistencies that could be confusing Google about your business location. Our citation building process includes structured citations (directory listings), unstructured citations (mentions in news articles and blog posts), and industry-specific citations that signal relevance to your niche.

Local Keyword Research

Effective local SEO starts with understanding exactly what your potential customers are searching for. We go far beyond basic keyword tools. We analyse Google's autocomplete suggestions, 'People Also Ask' questions, competitor keyword gaps, and Google Business Profile search queries to build a comprehensive keyword map. For every client, we identify 50-100+ local keyword opportunities including primary service keywords ('solicitor London'), long-tail variations ('best family solicitor in north London'), 'near me' queries, question-based searches that trigger AI Overviews, and seasonal or trending local terms. Each keyword is mapped to a specific page on your website with a clear content strategy.

On-Page SEO for Local Pages

Your website needs to send clear local signals to Google. We optimise every on-page element for local search including title tags with city and service keywords, meta descriptions written to maximise click-through rates, properly structured H1-H6 heading hierarchies, LocalBusiness schema markup with JSON-LD, NAP consistency across every page, embedded Google Maps, locally-relevant internal linking, and mobile-first responsive design. We also create dedicated location pages for each area you serve, service-specific landing pages optimised for local intent, and area guides that demonstrate genuine local expertise. Every page is tested for Core Web Vitals performance to ensure fast loading times.

Review Management

Reviews are the third most important local ranking factor, and they're the number one factor influencing whether a customer chooses your business over a competitor. We implement a complete review management strategy that includes creating review generation workflows (email sequences, SMS follow-ups, QR codes, and in-person ask scripts), responding to every review within 24 hours with personalised responses, monitoring your review profile across Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, and industry-specific platforms, and implementing review schema markup to display star ratings in search results. We also develop strategies for professionally addressing negative reviews to protect and enhance your online reputation.

Local Link Building

Backlinks from locally-relevant, authoritative websites tell Google that your business is trusted in your community. We earn high-quality local backlinks through partnerships with local business associations and chambers of commerce, sponsorship of local events and charities, digital PR outreach to local newspapers and online publications, guest posting on locally-relevant blogs and industry websites, and resource page link building. Every link is placed on a real site with a real audience, because a local business cannot afford a manual action. We never use private blog networks, link farms, or any tactic that could put your website at risk. Our focus is on sustainable, white-hat link building that compounds over time.

Competitor Analysis

Understanding what your local competitors are doing right, and where they're falling short, is necessary for building a winning strategy. We conduct thorough competitor analysis including mapping their Google Business Profile optimisation, auditing their citation profiles, analysing their backlink portfolios, reviewing their on-page SEO and content strategies, and identifying keyword gaps where they rank but you don't. This intelligence allows us to build a strategy that targets the weaknesses in your competitors' approach while doubling down on the tactics that are proven to work in your specific market.

Monthly Reporting

Transparency is at the core of everything we do. Every month, you receive a comprehensive report that covers your Google Business Profile performance (views, searches, calls, direction requests, website clicks), local keyword ranking movements for all tracked keywords, website traffic from local searches with conversion data, citation building progress and accuracy scores, review acquisition and sentiment analysis, and a clear action plan for the coming month. Reports are written in plain English, no jargon, no vanity metrics. We also include a recorded video walkthrough so you can see exactly what we've done and what we're planning next.

Our Proven Local SEO Process

A systematic, data-driven approach to improving your local search visibility

  1. 1

    Free Local SEO Audit

Every engagement starts with a comprehensive audit. We analyse your Google Business Profile completeness and optimisation, your website's technical SEO health, your citation accuracy across major UK directories, your review profile and sentiment, and your top 5 local competitors. This audit identifies quick wins that can deliver immediate improvements and long-term opportunities that will drive sustainable growth. You receive a detailed report with prioritised recommendations: whether or not you choose to work with us.

  2. 2

    Keyword Research & Strategy

Based on our audit findings, we conduct deep keyword research to identify 50-100+ local search terms your customers use. We map every keyword to a specific page, prioritise based on search volume, competition, and commercial intent, and build a 6-month content calendar. Your custom strategy document outlines exactly what we'll do, when we'll do it, and what results to expect at each milestone.

  3. 3

    Google Business Profile Optimisation

We implement a complete optimisation of your Google Business Profile, starting with category research and selection, writing a keyword-rich business description, uploading and geo-tagging photos, setting up Google Posts templates, seeding your Q&A section, and establishing review response workflows. This step alone typically produces measurable improvements in profile views and customer actions within 2-4 weeks.

  4. 4

    On-Page & Technical SEO

We optimise your website for local search signals including title tags, meta descriptions, heading structures, schema markup, NAP consistency, and internal linking. We create or optimise location-specific landing pages, fix any technical issues affecting crawlability or speed, and ensure your site passes Core Web Vitals assessments. Mobile optimisation is prioritised since over 60% of local searches happen on mobile devices.

  5. 5

    Citation Building & Link Acquisition

We submit your business to 200+ UK directories with consistent NAP information, build citations on industry-specific platforms, and begin outreach for local link building opportunities. We also audit and correct any existing citation inconsistencies that could be confusing search engines about your business location. This step is ongoing. We continuously identify new citation and link opportunities.

  6. 6

    Ongoing Monitoring & Optimisation

Local SEO is not a one-time project. It requires continuous attention. Every month, we monitor your rankings and adjust strategy, publish fresh Google Posts, respond to new reviews, identify new keyword opportunities, build additional citations and links, and provide detailed performance reports. We also stay ahead of Google algorithm updates and adapt our approach to ensure your rankings continue to improve.

Why Local SEO Matters for Your Business in 2026

The local search market is evolving faster than ever, and 2026 brings significant changes that make professional local SEO more important than at any point in history. Google's AI Overviews now appear for approximately 28% of local queries, fundamentally changing how potential customers discover and evaluate local businesses. These AI-generated summaries pull information from your Google Business Profile, website content, and reviews, making it necessary that every aspect of your online presence is optimised for accuracy and relevance.

Mobile "near me" searches continue to grow at an extraordinary rate, having increased by over 500% in recent years. Voice search through smart speakers and virtual assistants is now driving a substantial portion of local queries, with users asking questions like "What's the best plumber near me?" or "Find a dentist open on Saturday in Manchester." These conversational queries require a different approach to keyword targeting and content strategy.

Google Maps has evolved from a simple directions tool into a full-fledged discovery platform. Users now browse Google Maps like they would a search engine, scrolling through local businesses, reading reviews, viewing photos, and making decisions without ever visiting a website. For UK businesses specifically, the post-pandemic shift toward supporting local businesses has created unprecedented demand for local search optimisation. Consumers actively want to find and support businesses in their community, but they can only do that if those businesses are visible in local search results. The businesses that invest in local SEO now will capture this growing demand, while those that don't will continue to lose market share to competitors who do.

Local SEO for Multiple Locations

Managing local SEO for businesses with multiple locations presents unique challenges that require a specialised approach. Each location needs its own Google Business Profile, unique localised content, location-specific citations, and an independent review management strategy. Without careful management, multi-location businesses often suffer from duplicate content issues, inconsistent NAP information, and cannibalisation where their own locations compete against each other in search results.

At iTech Digital, we've developed a proven multi-location SEO framework that treats each location as its own entity while maintaining brand consistency. We create unique, locally-relevant landing pages for each location, build separate citation profiles, develop location-specific content strategies, and implement proper schema markup that helps Google understand the relationship between your locations. Our clients with multiple locations across cities like London, Manchester, Leeds, and Glasgow have seen consistent improvements across all locations, with our systematic approach ensuring no location is neglected.

Local SEO and GBP Optimisation: Where Each One Ends

These two services overlap, and rather than leave you to work out which page you need, here is the division plainly. Google local SEO is the whole programme: your website, your profile, your citations, your reviews, your links and your content, working together to make you visible across local search. Google Business Profile optimisation is one component of it, and the most important single one, which is why it also exists as a service in its own right.

Buy Google Business Profile optimisation on its own when your website is in reasonable shape and the problem is specifically that you are not appearing in the map pack, or when your profile is unverified, suspended, duplicated or simply never completed. It is a contained piece of work with a fast payback. Our Google Business Profile optimisation service covers it in full, including geo-grid tracking and reinstatement work.

Buy local SEO when you need the whole picture moving: profile work plus the on-page and technical side of your website, local keyword research mapped to pages, citation cleanup, review generation, local link building and content. Most businesses that come to us for profile work alone end up here within a few months, because a well-optimised profile attached to a weak website hits a ceiling quickly.

Where the shared subjects live. NAP consistency, service-area setup and multi-location structure appear on both pages because both services touch them. If you are buying local SEO, we handle all of it as one programme and you do not need to think about the split. If you are buying profile optimisation alone, the profile side is covered and the website side stays with you or your web team.

Near me SEO and multi-location SEO are the two questions we get asked about most often, and neither is a separate product. Near me searches are won through proximity, categories, reviews and prominence rather than by adding the phrase "near me" to your pages, which does nothing. Multi-location SEO is a structural exercise in giving each branch its own profile, its own genuinely distinct page and its own citation set, so your locations stop competing with each other. Both are inside local SEO rather than alongside it.

We deliver both services across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so anywhere in the United Kingdom, and local search marketing is priced the same wherever you are. What changes by location is how contested your category is, which is what the free audit establishes before you commit to anything.

Local Search Marketing Beyond Google

Google local SEO, or local search engine optimisation, is usually treated as a purely Google exercise, and Google is rightly the priority. But your customers are also using Apple Maps, Bing and AI assistants, and the platforms nobody optimises for are the cheapest visibility you will ever buy.

Google Business Profile

The foundation of local search visibility, covering GBP categories, description, services, photos, Google Posts, questions and answers, and reviews. Roughly a third of local pack ranking weight sits here.

Bing Places

Smaller than Google but far from irrelevant, particularly for older and business-to-business audiences on Windows devices, and increasingly important because Bing data feeds Copilot and other AI assistants. Claiming and completing Bing Places takes an hour and most competitors have not bothered.

Apple Business Connect

Apple Maps is the default on every iPhone, which in the UK is roughly half of all phones. Apple Business Connect is where you control that listing, add showcases and keep your details accurate. It is one of the most neglected assets in UK local search.

Directories and data aggregators

Local directory citations across the UK directory ecosystem plus the aggregators that feed it, so your details propagate consistently rather than being corrected one site at a time.

Citations, NAP and Citation Consistency

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. Google uses the agreement between those mentions as a confidence signal: when your details match everywhere, Google trusts them, and that trust supports your ranking. Where they conflict, the signal weakens.

Citation consistency is one of the few ranking factors you can fix completely and then keep fixed. We audit your business across more than 200 UK directories, industry bodies and data aggregators, correct or claim what is wrong, build the local directory citations you are missing, and hand over a documented record so it stays consistent when your details change.

Duplicate listing removal. Duplicate profiles split your reviews and ranking signals between two entries, and frequently neither ranks. They are common after a rebrand, a move or a change of ownership. We identify them, merge or remove them through the correct process, and consolidate review history where the platform allows it.

Service-Area Businesses and Duplicate Listings

Service-area businesses. If you travel to customers rather than serving them at a premises, your profile should hide its street address and define coverage by the towns and postcodes you actually work in. Getting this wrong is a common cause of suspension, and setting an unrealistically wide service area dilutes relevance without adding reach. We configure the service area properly and support it with location content on your site so the geography is backed by something Google can crawl.

Local SEO Services by Sector

The mechanics are consistent, but the competition, the compliance rules and the language customers use are not. These are the sectors we work in most.

Local SEO for law firms

Practice area and location pages, SRA-compliant content, legal directory citations, and the review strategy that works within professional conduct rules.

Local SEO for dentists and healthcare

Treatment pages built around what patients search for, healthcare directory citations, and review generation that respects patient confidentiality.

Local SEO for trades

Emergency and planned work intent handled separately, service-area configuration done correctly, and the citation base that trades competitors rarely build.

Local SEO for hospitality

Menu and booking visibility, photo and post cadence, and the review velocity that drives discovery for restaurants and venues.

Local SEO for estate agents

Branch and area pages that rank for property searches without duplicating each other, plus portal and directory consistency.

Local SEO for small businesses

A proportionate programme for independent businesses: profile, citations, on-page and reviews done properly before anything more expensive is considered.

Reporting and Rank Tracking

Local SEO is easy to sell and hard to prove, so we measure it in a way you can check yourself.

What we track What it tells you
Geo-grid rank tracking Map pack position measured from dozens of points across your service area and shown as a heat map, because a single average position tells you nothing useful about a result that changes street by street.
Google Search Console Impressions, clicks, average position and query data for your organic listings, plus index coverage and Core Web Vitals reporting. This is where we see which local search terms you are gaining and losing.
GA4 and conversion tracking Google Analytics 4 configured so local traffic is separated from the rest, with calls, form submissions and direction requests recorded as conversions rather than left as unmeasured outcomes.
Call tracking Dynamic number insertion so phone enquiries are attributed to the channel that produced them. For most local businesses the phone is the main conversion, and leaving it untracked hides the majority of your return.

You get access to every tool we use. Google Search Console, GA4 and your Google Business Profile stay in your accounts, and the rank tracking dashboard is shared with you rather than screenshotted into a PDF once a month.

Reporting tools. Monthly reporting is assembled in Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, pulling live from Search Console, GA4, your call tracking and the geo-grid tracker into one dashboard you can open any day of the month rather than waiting for a report. The rank tracking itself uses Local Falcon for map results and a conventional rank tracker for the standard organic listings, because those are two different results with two different rankings and reporting them as one number hides more than it shows.

Reading the SERPs, not just your position. Position alone is an increasingly poor measure of local visibility, because what surrounds it decides whether anybody sees you. The same position three is worth very different amounts depending on whether the SERPs for that term carry a map pack, an AI Overview, a set of ads, a People Also Ask block or a batch of directory listings above the organic results. We record what the SERPs actually look like for your priority terms, track how that composition changes, and factor it into what a ranking is worth. A term where you have moved from five to three but an AI Overview has appeared above everything may be worth less than it was, and you should hear that from us rather than discover it in your enquiry numbers.

2026 Search

Getting Cited by AI Search

Ask an assistant to recommend a solicitor in Manchester or an emergency plumber near you, and it will produce a shortlist. That shortlist is assembled from business profile data, review content, citations and the pages on your website, not from a ranking position. If you are not in it, you never find out, because the demand never reaches your analytics.

Generative engine optimisation, sometimes called answer engine optimisation, is the work of becoming one of the businesses those systems name. For local businesses the good news is that the inputs overlap almost entirely with the local SEO signals you should be building anyway.

Consistent entity data everywhere

Assistants cross-reference your name, address, phone number and category across your profile, your citations and your site. Inconsistency makes you a less reliable answer, which is one more reason citation consistency earns its place in the workload.

Review content as source material

Language models quote review language when explaining why a business is recommended. Reviews that mention specific services and locations do more work here than a wall of five-star ratings with no text.

Answer-first location content

Location and service pages that open with a direct answer are far more quotable than pages that build up to the point. This is the same structure that wins featured snippets and People Also Ask.

LocalBusiness schema and llms.txt

Complete LocalBusiness markup plus an llms.txt file gives AI crawlers an unambiguous statement of who you are, what you do and where you do it, from a source you control.

This is included in every local SEO retainer. We report on which assistant prompts surface your business and which competitors are being named instead.

Areas We Serve

Local SEO is the one service where geography genuinely changes the work. Competition in central London bears no resemblance to competition in a market town, and the citation sources that matter in Glasgow are not the ones that matter in Leeds. We build every campaign around your actual catchment.

We also run local SEO campaigns in Edinburgh, Bristol, Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Cardiff, Southampton, Brighton, Norwich and Oxford, plus a long list of towns that never make anyone's homepage. If your area is not listed, that is not a limitation. What matters is your service radius, not ours, and the first thing we do is map the competition inside it.

Choosing a Local SEO Agency in the UK

There is no shortage of local SEO UK providers, and the quality varies more than in almost any other marketing discipline. The work is largely invisible to the client, which makes it easy to charge for and hard to verify, so it is worth knowing what to ask before you sign anything.

Ask to see geo-grid ranking data rather than a screenshot of one keyword at position one. Ask whether you will retain ownership of your Google Business Profile, Google Search Console and Google Analytics accounts, because some providers keep them and hand back nothing. Ask what the local SEO strategy is for the first ninety days specifically, and whether there is a contract lock-in. Any credible local SEO agency will answer all four without hesitating.

We are a small UK local SEO company rather than a large one, which shapes what we are good at. You deal with the people doing the work, not an account manager relaying messages. Our local SEO packages run month to month with no lock-in, and every account stays in your name. That model does not suit everyone, and if you need a large team with a dedicated account structure we will say so.

We work with independent businesses and multi-site groups alike. Local SEO services for small businesses are deliberately proportionate: get the profile, citations, on-page and reviews right before spending on anything more elaborate. At the other end, local SEO services for law firms, dental groups and estate agents need compliance-aware content and a slower, more careful review strategy, which is a different job with a different budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Local SEO

Everything UK businesses ask us before starting local SEO, grouped by what you are trying to find out.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Local SEO and regular (or 'organic') SEO share foundational principles but differ significantly in execution and goals. Regular SEO aims to rank your website nationally or globally for broad keywords. Local SEO specifically targets searches with geographic intent: 'near me' queries, city-specific searches, and Google Maps results. Local SEO involves unique tactics including Google Business Profile optimisation, local citation building, review management, and geo-targeted content creation. The ranking factors also differ: Google uses proximity, relevance, and prominence to determine local rankings, while organic rankings rely more heavily on content quality, backlinks, and technical SEO.
Do I need local SEO for my business?
Yes, if your business serves customers in a specific geographic area, local SEO is not just beneficial. It's necessary. Consider these statistics: 46% of all Google searches have local intent, 76% of people who search for something local on their phone visit a related business within 24 hours, and 28% of local searches result in a purchase. Without local SEO, you're invisible to these potential customers. Even if you get business through word-of-mouth or referrals, local SEO opens up an entirely new channel of customers who are actively searching for exactly what you offer. Your competitors are investing in local SEO: if you're not, they're capturing your potential customers.
What are local citations and why do they matter?
Local citations are online mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on websites other than your own. They appear on business directories like Yell, Thomson Local, and Bing Places, as well as on social media platforms, industry-specific directories, and local business associations. Citations matter because they act as trust signals to Google: the more consistent, accurate citations your business has across reputable websites, the more confident Google is about showing your business in local search results. Inconsistent citations (different phone numbers, old addresses) can confuse search engines and hurt your rankings. We build and maintain citations across 200+ UK directories.
How do Google reviews affect local SEO rankings?
Google reviews are one of the top three local ranking factors, directly influencing both your position in the local pack and whether customers choose your business. Businesses with more positive reviews rank higher in local search results, and Google's algorithm considers review quantity, quality (star rating), velocity (how frequently you receive new reviews), and diversity (reviews across multiple platforms). Beyond rankings, reviews significantly impact click-through rates and conversion, 87% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. Our review management strategy focuses on generating authentic reviews through systematic follow-up processes while ensuring professional responses to all feedback.
Do you offer local SEO services UK wide, and does location affect the price?
Yes, we work UK wide across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and your postcode does not change the price. Local SEO runs from £300 to £1,000 a month, and what moves you along that range is how contested your category is. Ranking a plumber in a market town is a smaller job than ranking a solicitor in central London. The free audit tells you which end you are at before you commit.
How much does local SEO cost in the UK?
Local SEO services in the UK typically range from £300 to £3,000+ per month depending on the scope of work, competitiveness of your market, and number of locations. Our packages start at £300/month for single-location businesses and go up to £1,000/month for comprehensive, multi-location campaigns. Every client receives a custom proposal based on their specific needs. We never offer one-size-fits-all solutions. We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees, and our rolling monthly contracts mean you're never locked in. The ROI from effective local SEO typically far exceeds the investment within the first 6 months.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Local SEO typically takes 3-6 months to show significant results, though some improvements can appear within weeks. Quick wins like Google Business Profile optimisation and citation corrections can improve your visibility almost immediately. More competitive keywords and markets naturally take longer. We set realistic expectations during our initial audit and provide monthly reports so you can track progress from day one. Most of our clients see meaningful increases in calls, clicks, and enquiries by month 3, with substantial results by month 6. The work we do compounds over time, so results continue to improve the longer we work together.
What reporting do you provide for local SEO?
A live Looker Studio dashboard, formerly Google Data Studio, that you can open any day rather than a PDF once a month. It pulls together Search Console, GA4, call tracking and geo-grid rank tracking in one place. Geo-grid rank tracking is the part most clients find genuinely new: instead of one position for a keyword, you see a heat map of your map pack position measured from dozens of points across your service area, so you can watch your visible radius expand rather than watching a single number. We also record how the SERPs themselves are changing for your priority terms, because an AI Overview or a new ads block appearing above the results changes what a position is worth.
How do I rank higher in local search on mobile?
Most local searches happen on a phone, so mobile optimisation is not a separate project, it is the main one. To rank higher in local search on mobile you need the page to load fast on a real mobile connection, tap targets and phone numbers that work without pinching, and a Google Business Profile that is complete, because on mobile the profile often is the result. Near me SEO is the same discipline: you do not win near me searches by adding the phrase to your pages, you win them through proximity, correct categories, review volume and prominence. Mobile optimisation and local search engine optimisation have effectively merged for local businesses, and treating them separately is why some sites still lose to slower competitors with better profiles.
What is the Google local pack?
The Google local pack (also called the 'map pack' or '3-pack') is the section of Google search results that displays three local business listings alongside a map. It appears for searches with local intent, such as 'dentist near me' or 'plumber Birmingham', and receives significantly more clicks than standard organic results below it. Appearing in the local pack is the primary goal of local SEO because it provides maximum visibility with your business name, rating, address, phone number, and hours displayed prominently. Google determines local pack rankings based on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (proximity to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business is online).
How do I rank higher in Google Maps?
Ranking higher in Google Maps requires a multi-faceted approach focused on the three factors Google uses for local rankings: relevance, distance, and prominence. To improve relevance, ensure your Google Business Profile has accurate categories, a keyword-rich description, and complete information. Distance is determined by the searcher's location, which you cannot control, but you can expand your reach by creating location-specific content. To build prominence, focus on earning more positive Google reviews, building citations on authoritative directories, gaining backlinks from local websites, and keeping your GBP active with regular posts and photos. Consistency is key: businesses that maintain ongoing optimisation efforts consistently outperform those that treat it as a one-time project.
What are the most important local SEO ranking factors?
According to multiple industry studies, the most important local SEO ranking factors for the local pack in 2026 are: Google Business Profile signals (categories, keywords in description, photos, posts, reviews) accounting for approximately 32% of ranking influence; on-page signals (NAP consistency, keyword in title tags, domain authority, location pages) at 19%; review signals (quantity, velocity, diversity, keywords in reviews) at 16%; link signals (quality and quantity of inbound links, domain authority of linking sites) at 11%; citation signals (consistency, volume, quality of NAP across directories) at 7%; behavioural signals (click-through rates, mobile clicks-to-call, check-ins) at 7%; and personalisation signals at 6%. Our local SEO services address all of these ranking factors systematically.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes, you can handle some local SEO tasks yourself, and we encourage business owners to stay involved. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, asking happy customers for reviews, and ensuring your NAP is consistent on your website are great starting points. However, comprehensive local SEO requires specialised tools (which cost £200-500/month alone), ongoing time commitment (10-20 hours/month), technical expertise for schema markup and site optimisation, and knowledge of constantly evolving best practices. Most business owners find their time is better spent running their business while a dedicated team handles the complex, ongoing work of local SEO.
